Geothermal loop field types

Three basic types of closed loop geothermal energy sources – horizontal loop, pond loop, and vertical loop – are typically used to heat and cool residential homes. These closed loop systems circulate a water- based solution through a “loop” of small-diameter underground pipes.

 

Horizontal Loops are often considered when adequate land surface is

available. Pipes are placed in trenches, in lengths ranging from 100’-400’.


 

Pond (Lake) Loops are very economical to install when a body of water

is available, because excavation costs are virtually eliminated.


 

Vertical Loops are the ideal choice when available land surface is

limited, such as compact residential or urban areas. Drilling equipment is
